Implementation of the electricity balancing capacity fee from 01.01.2026

Dear customer!According to § 53¹, subsection 3 of the Electricity Market Act, from 1 January 2026 all electricity consumers and producers must pay a balancing capacity fee to the system operator Elering. The purpose of this fee is to ensure the readiness of fast-reacting power plants – the balancing reserves (frequency reserves). If production changes sharply or unexpected failures occur, these reserves help to prevent power outages and restore the balance between consumption and production.In accordance with § 531, subsection 3 of the Electricity Market Act, the open supplier (electricity seller) must list the balancing capacity fee as a separate line item, and the fee applies to consumed and produced electricity starting from January 2026. The fee will appear for the first time on your January 2026 invoice, which we will send you in February.The approved balancing capacity fee remains at the same level throughout 2026. The tariff for both consumers and producers is 3.73 €/MWh (or 0.00373 €/kWh) without VAT, and 4.6252 €/MWh (or 0.004652 €/kWh) including VAT. This fee is not included in the electricity price and will be added to your electricity bill as a separate line. If you are a consumer, the balancing capacity fee is calculated only based on your consumption. If you also produce electricity, the fee will additionally be applied to your production volumes.The fee is cost-based, meaning that starting from 2027, the system operator Elering may adjust it with six months’ notice depending on changes in the actual costs of purchasing frequency reserves. Payment with US bank cards in the Alexela app suspended

Due to a widespread wave of fraud, payments with US-issued bank cards have been temporarily suspended in the Alexela mobile application.The suspension was implemented by LHV Bank, which has received multiple disputes concerning transactions carried out with US bank cards added to the Alexela app. Such disputes are initiated by the actual cardholder through their bank.As these fraud cases are not limited to Alexela but represent a broader issue, the bank unfortunately had no other option than to temporarily suspend all transactions made with US-issued cards.

220 Energia OÜ merges with the company AS Alexela

Due to the merger of 220 Energia OÜ with AS Alexela, both companies' self-services and apps for electricity and natural gas functionalities will not be available from 13.06. 17:00 until 16.06. 20:00. After the interruption, 220 Energia's self-service will be closed, and all 220 Energia OÜ contracts, invoices, and consumption data will be transferred to the Alexela self-service environment, where it will be possible to manage energy-related services in the future.

Alexela starts selling hydrogen cylinders and opens the first hydrogen stations in Estonia

Two green hydrogen stations will be opened in Tallinn next October, one of which is a filling station for passenger cars on Peterburi Road and the other is a filling station for hydrogen buses and trucks in Väo, created in cooperation with Utilitas. In addition, Alexela will be ready to start selling hydrogen cylinders to consumers next year. The state is also preparing for the hydrogen revolution - the first procurement of hydrogen ferries is being prepared.The construction permit for the first hydrogen filling station has already been issued, the equipment and technology have been ordered, expected to arrive by next September.Unlike Latvia, hydrogen sold in Estonia will be 100% green, produced from renewable sources.Public transport takes the leadThere are only a few hydrogen cars currently on the roads of Estonia and these are refuelled in Riga," said Tarmo Kärsna, Head of Energy Sales at Alexela, "we know that 30 hydrogen vehicles will start running as public transport next fall, and car dealers predict that hundreds more cars and heavy equipment, including buses, trucks and ships, will be added in the coming years." The hydrogen that Alexela offers complies with the hydrogen quality requirements of ISO 14687 and it is produced by a 1MW electrolyser developed by Stargate Hydrogen's, a European deep-tech company focused on advancing the production of green hydrogen through innovative ceramic-based electrolysis technology. Marko Virkebau CEO of Stargate Hydrogen commented: “The retail distribution of green hydrogen by Alexela marks a major step forward in decarbonizing transport and industry in North of Europe."The first national procurement of ferries is coming to an end, various car manufacturers are coming out with new hydrogen cars, and an increasing number of mobile gadgets are being produced that do not need electricity. Public investments and support mechanisms accelerate the introduction of alternative fuels and encourage private sector contributions.Alexela develops a sustainable network of service stations through the creation of biomethane, LNG, electricity and, in the near future, hydrogen filling up facilities. Alexela produces biomethane based on circular economy principles and builds solar parks and wind farms. In addition, the company together with its partners operates an LNG terminal in Hamina, Finland, as well as develops a renewable pumped-storage hydropower facility called Energiasalv in Paldiski and a biogas plant for peak loads.

Alexela joins PÖFF
