New electricity calculation principle: what do electricity producers need to know?

From 1 August 2026, the electricity metering principle changed for customers who generate their own electricity, for example using solar panels.

Previously, electricity taken from the grid and electricity fed into the grid were measured separately. The network operator now compares these amounts for each 15-minute period and calculates the difference between them. The network operator then sends this information to the electricity seller, who uses it to prepare the electricity bill. The electricity seller relies on the metering data provided by the network operator.

For example, if you take 4 kWh of electricity from the grid during a 15-minute period and feed 3 kWh back into the grid at the same time, your consumption for that period will be recorded as 1 kWh. If you feed more electricity into the grid than you use from it during the same period, the remaining amount will be recorded as electricity fed into the grid.

A production contract is required to sell electricity to the grid

To receive payment for electricity fed into the grid, you must have an electricity production contract, also known as a contract for feeding electricity into the grid.

Without a production contract, we are unable to pay you for the electricity you feed into the grid. However, if electricity is fed into the grid, the balancing capacity cost required to maintain the balance of the electricity system still applies by law.
